Freon™ 404A is a nonflammable, low toxicity refrigerant that carries an ASHRAE A1 safety classification and offers similar properties to the refrigerant it replaces. It has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a global warming potential (GWP) of 3920.

Freon™ 404A offers the best overall properties when compared to R-502. Its capacity and efficiency values are equivalent to R-502. It operates at comparable physical and thermodynamic properties which makes transitioning to new systems or retrofitting older systems easier. The compressor discharge temperatures of Freon™ 404A can fall 9 °C (14 °F) lower than R-502, which may lead to longer compressor life and better lubricant stability.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) recommend using polyolester (POE) oil in a unit’s compressor when replacing R-502 with Freon™ 404A. After the oil change, Freon 404A will offer the same operating range as R-502.

R-410A, sold under the trademarked names AZ-20, EcoFluor R410, Forane 410A, Genetron R410A, Puron, and Suva 410A, is a zeotropic but near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH₂F₂, called R-32) and pentafluoroethane (CHF₂CF₃, called R-125) that is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pump applications. R-410A cylinders were colored rose but are no longer specially color-coded, now bearing a standard light gray color.^[1][2]

On December 27, 2020, the United States Congress passed the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which directs US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to phase down production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).^[3] HFCs have a high global warming potential and contribute to climate change. Rules developed under the AIM Act require HFC production and consumption to be reduced by 85% from 2022 to 2036.^[4] R-410A will be restricted by this Act because it contains the HFC R-125. Other refrigerants (like R-32 and R-454B)^[5] will replace R-410A in most applications, just as R-410A replaced the earlier refrigerant, R-22.
